Shannonside 7 - 4 Abbeyfeale B
On a very stormy Saturday morning our under 16 boys took on Abbeyfeale B at home in Aughinish.
Well rested after the Christmas break we were eager to resume our league campaign.
We won the toss and opted to play with the wind, a decision which we did not regret. From the kick off we were camped in the oppositions half. We had a number of chances and got our just reward when Noelie Griffon put the ball in the back of the net. Not to be outdone, Liam McSweeney got the second, Noelie again got the third. A sweeping corner by Jack Hayes deflected off an Abbeyfeale player made it 4 goals to nil with only twenty minutes gone. Stephen Holland created a lot of chances and was very unlucky not to be rewarded with his own name on the scoresheet. Cormac O Connor delivered in pass after pass to our forwards and Liam McSweeney capitalised for us once again, 5 nil. An over the top pass by Stephen O Connell to Jack Hayes made it 6 goals to nil. Abbeyfeale did not have too many chances in the first half, but when they did come at us our back line of Daragh Woulfe, John Walsh, Paudie Flavin and Shane Fay stood strong and dealt very well with the pressure. The one or two shots that Abbeyfeale B did manage to get away were dealt with by the safe hands of Cian Walsh who was in goals.
Half time score 6 - 0.
We knew we had a good lead at half time, but we also knew we would be against the wind in the second half. We started well with chances for Liam McSweeney and Stephen Holland and both were unlucky not to score. Even though he played very well Stephen Holland made way for Dylan Reidy who was anxious to join the attack. A great ball from Cormac to Dylan and a flick onto Liam and the ball was again in the back of the Abbeyfeale net. Had Liam his hat trick, No, the whistle had gone for offside
Fifteen minutes into the second half and with most of the play in the Abbeyfeale half we got a bit relaxed and over confident, with a number of positional changes made we were now coming under pressure from the Abbeyfeale attack. Abbeyfeale got their just reward when they scored three unanswered goals, one from a penalty and two from play, 6 goals to 3. We did not panic and repositioned our players and went on the attack again. We had three secret weapons in the form of Jack,Noelie and Liam all desperately trying to get a third goal for a hat trick. After what seemed like an eternity Liam got the ball in the back of the net to make it 7 goals to 3.
Abbeyfeale came back strong and attacked with vengeance. Our back line stood strong and Cian made a number of great saves, however Abbeyfeale did manage to get off one magical shot to the bottom left corner of the goal glancing off the post as it went in, just beyond the fingertips of a fully stretched Cian Walsh.
From the tip off we went attacking again and had a few good chances, with the post saving shots from both Liam and Dylan. Any ball that came towards our half were dealt with and sent back with interest.
When the full time whistle went all would admire Abbeyfeale on their commitment and never say die attitude .However it was Shannonsides day and a well deserved win.
Full time score Shannonside 7 goals Abbeyfeale B 4 goals.
