Close…but no cigar!
Shannonside FC 0 – 2 Newcastle West Rovers
Couple of video clips of the lads in action this morning against NCW Rovers. Another case of what might have been. A scoreless first half in which Shannonside had the better of the chances but could not find the back of the net. The second half was far more eventful with Rovers scoring early on from what can only be described as an accidental goal that resulted from a series of failed clearance ricochets. In fairness to the players their heads didn’t drop and they doubled their efforts to grab an equaliser. They began to control the game from midfield and put the Rovers defence under extreme pressure at times, but despite a number of shots, frees, and corners they couldn’t manage to beat the Rovers keeper.
Having failed to press home their advantage Shannonside were caught napping in defence and conceded a relatively soft second goal with only 15 minutes left on the clock. At this point the manager made a couple of tactical changes and the injection of fresh legs and positional changes led to the team laying siege to the Rovers defence. Some more corners, frees, and more than a few dodgy offside decisions from the referee, but still no goals for Shannonside. The full time whistle brought their efforts to a close in a match that could easily have finished with the scores reversed. There is no doubt that this team can play soccer and that they have some talented players; they just have to start finding some goals.
